This case study explores how CIPS qualifications can transform procurement from a largely operational function into a more strategic, value-driven capability within an organisation.
How has the CIPS qualification helped in your current role?
Having worked in procurement for a number of years, it can be easy to assume much of the role is based on experience or “common sense”. The CIPS qualification challenges this mindset by introducing structured frameworks, theory and best practice that enhance decision-making and strategic thinking.
I found the tools introduced through CIPS — including risk analysis, sustainability, portfolio analysis and category planning — immediately applicable in my role. The modules covering procurement law and financial analysis were particularly valuable in raising the profile of procurement within the wider business.
How has the CIPS qualification enhanced your career?
The qualification has strengthened my expertise in areas such as contract development, negotiation and understanding the legal foundations of business relationships. This has been especially beneficial in roles involving complex contract negotiations.
More broadly, knowledge in category management, risk and sustainability has supported the development of more effective organisational strategies. On a personal level, studying CIPS has helped me clarify my long-term career direction and the type of organisations I want to work for.
How has the training benefited your organisation?
Several members of our team began their CIPS journey, which significantly enhanced both individual capability and overall team performance. It enabled us to approach challenges with new ideas and frameworks, while increasing the visibility and impact of procurement within the organisation.
We were able to introduce practical improvements such as risk registers and sustainability policies — initiatives that delivered immediate value and would not have been possible without the knowledge gained through training.
Can you describe a situation where your CIPS knowledge made an impact?
Prior to undertaking CIPS, we had an existing supplier classification system in place. However, this was fundamentally restructured using the knowledge and frameworks gained through the course.
This led to stronger, more strategic supplier relationships, a clearer focus on value creation, and a more effective segmentation of suppliers. Some suppliers were repositioned from “strategic” to more appropriate tactical roles, ensuring better value for money and improved long-term planning.
This shift laid the foundations for future innovation, enabling us to align supplier relationships with short-, medium- and long-term category strategies. CIPS training was a key enabler in helping the team think differently and add measurable value.
