CIPS Membership and MCIPS: Qualifications & Career Benefits

Procurement and Supply

For procurement and supply professionals, CIPS membership provides a recognised way to demonstrate professional knowledge, experience and commitment to recognised standards within the profession.

You may have seen employers asking for “CIPS-qualified” candidates or heard experienced procurement professionals refer to achieving MCIPS. These terms are related, but they are not the same: CIPS qualifications provide a structured learning pathway, while MCIPS is a professional membership designation awarded by the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply.

This guide explains how CIPS qualifications, membership grades and MCIPS professional status fit together. For a broader introduction to the organisation itself, read our guide to what CIPS is and how its qualifications work.

Checking prior to procurement

What is CIPS membership?

CIPS membership is available to people working across procurement, purchasing and supply management at different stages of their careers.

CIPS qualifications and membership grades are related, but they serve different purposes. Qualifications provide a structured route for developing professional knowledge, while membership reflects an individual’s relationship with the professional body and, at higher grades, their experience and professional standing.

Depending on the membership grade, members may have access to professional resources, industry insight, ethical guidance and continuing professional development opportunities. Membership can also help demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional development within procurement and supply.

CIPS offers different membership grades depending on factors such as qualifications, experience and route into the profession. These include student and affiliate membership, alongside professionally recognised grades such as MCIPS and FCIPS.

What does MCIPS mean?

MCIPS stands for Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply. It is a recognised professional membership designation for procurement and supply practitioners who have completed an approved route and met the relevant CIPS requirements.

Professionals who achieve MCIPS may use the letters MCIPS after their name. The designation demonstrates recognised professional standing within procurement and supply and can support credibility with employers, clients and other professionals.

Depending on the route followed, achieving MCIPS may reflect developed knowledge and experience across areas such as:

  • Strategic sourcing and procurement
  • Contract and commercial management
  • Supplier relationship management
  • Risk management and resilience
  • Ethical and responsible procurement
  • Leadership and organisational strategy

MCIPS is not a standalone short-course qualification. It is a professional membership status achieved by meeting the requirements of an approved CIPS route, which may include professional study, relevant practical experience or other recognised pathways.

Which CIPS qualifications lead to MCIPS?

The principal qualification route to MCIPS professional status involves progressing through the CIPS Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Professional Diploma:

CIPS Level 4 Diploma in Procurement and Supply

CIPS Level 4 is the highest direct entry point within the CIPS qualification pathway and an important starting point for experienced procurement professionals progressing towards MCIPS through the professional qualification route.

It develops professional knowledge across areas such as commercial contracting, ethical and responsible sourcing, supplier relationships, negotiation and procurement planning.

Level 4 is commonly suited to procurement professionals who already have relevant experience or appropriate previous qualifications.

CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply

CIPS Level 5 builds on the knowledge developed at Level 4 and is designed for professionals taking on greater managerial, commercial or strategic responsibility.

Learners develop more advanced capability across areas such as organisational strategy, supply-chain risk, supplier relationships, contracting and procurement performance.

CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply

CIPS Level 6 is the final academic stage of the CIPS professional qualification pathway. It is aimed at experienced practitioners and those progressing towards strategic, leadership or senior procurement roles.

The qualification develops advanced capability across strategic leadership, commercial strategy, organisational change and complex procurement and supply challenges.

After completing Levels 4, 5 and 6, learners can apply to upgrade their CIPS membership to MCIPS once they also meet the relevant professional experience and current CIPS membership requirements.

Do you need to begin at CIPS Level 2?

No. You do not necessarily need to complete every CIPS qualification from Level 2 onwards.

The most appropriate starting point depends on your existing qualifications, procurement knowledge and workplace experience.

Someone who is new to purchasing or supply may benefit from beginning with:

Professionals with suitable knowledge and experience may be able to begin directly at CIPS Level 4, which is the highest direct entry point within the CIPS qualification pathway.

Choosing the right starting level is more important than simply starting as high as possible. The aim is to begin at a stage that provides an appropriate challenge without leaving significant gaps in your underlying procurement knowledge.

What is Chartered MCIPS?

Chartered Status is a further professional distinction available to eligible current MCIPS and FCIPS members.

It is separate from achieving MCIPS itself and reflects an ongoing commitment to professional development, ethical practice and maintaining professional standards.

To achieve and maintain Chartered Status, members must meet CIPS’s current requirements, which include continuing professional development and ethics-related obligations.

Chartered Status may be particularly relevant to experienced procurement managers, senior leaders and specialists who want to demonstrate continued professional development beyond their initial route to MCIPS.

How can CIPS membership benefit your career?

Studying towards CIPS qualifications and professional membership can support career development in several practical ways.

Recognised Professional Credibility

CIPS qualifications are recognised across a wide range of organisations and sectors. Progressing to MCIPS professional status can further demonstrate recognised knowledge, relevant professional experience and commitment to professional standards within procurement and supply.

Support for Career Progression

CIPS qualifications are commonly referenced in procurement and supply job descriptions, either as a desirable or essential requirement depending on the role.

Progressing through the qualification pathway can therefore support applications for positions involving greater commercial, managerial or strategic responsibility.

Transferable Procurement Knowledge

The principles covered by CIPS apply across many industries, including manufacturing, construction, healthcare, central government, local authorities, retail and professional services.

This means the knowledge developed through your studies can remain valuable when moving between organisations, sectors or different areas of procurement and supply.

Greater Confidence at Work

Formal study can help professionals understand the principles behind established procurement processes rather than relying solely on how tasks have traditionally been completed within one organisation.

Learners can apply this knowledge to activities such as supplier negotiations, tender exercises, contract reviews, risk assessments and stakeholder discussions.

Continued Professional Development

Procurement and supply are continually affected by changes in technology, regulation, sustainability expectations and global supply markets.

CIPS membership can support ongoing professional development by providing access to resources, guidance and opportunities to keep knowledge and skills current throughout your career.

How long does it take to achieve MCIPS?

The time required to achieve MCIPS professional status depends on your starting level, chosen study method, examination schedule, professional experience and the amount of time you can commit alongside work.

Learners beginning at Level 4 will normally need to complete Levels 4, 5 and 6 before applying through the professional qualification route. Those beginning at Level 2 or Level 3 will have additional foundation stages to complete first.

You must also meet the relevant CIPS professional experience and membership requirements before your MCIPS upgrade can be approved.

Rather than focusing only on completing the qualification pathway as quickly as possible, it is better to choose a study schedule that allows you to understand the material properly and apply it confidently in your role.

Choosing the right CIPS training provider

Your training provider can have a significant influence on your learning experience and how confidently you progress through your qualification.

Before enrolling, consider:

  • Whether the provider is an approved CIPS study centre
  • The experience and professional background of its tutors
  • The availability of live teaching and tutor support
  • Whether the study format fits around your working commitments
  • The quality of revision and examination preparation
  • Whether classroom, live virtual or flexible independent learning options are available

Bethanie Stimpson

Progress Mentor

Bethanie began her career in the fitness industry, working as a personal trainer and gym instructor before becoming involved in coaching children through a triathlon club. This experience sparked her passion for working with young people and ultimately led her into a career in education. She initially worked in a nursery and later as a one-to-one teaching assistant in a primary school, before completing her teaching qualification and postgraduate studies. Since then, Bethanie has taught in both the private and state education sectors.

Her academic background includes a qualification in Sports Development, Fitness and Coaching at college, alongside a Childhood & Youth undergraduate degree (2:1). These studies have enabled her to combine her interests in sport, education, and child development, shaping her holistic approach to teaching and mentoring.

Bethanie is passionate about supporting learners to achieve their goals — educationally, personally, and in terms of wellbeing. She places strong emphasis on communication and relationship building, and takes great pride in helping individuals build confidence and overcome challenges. One of her proudest achievements has been supporting learners who initially doubted themselves to grow in confidence and achieve success.

Outside of work, Bethanie has always maintained a strong interest in sport. She previously competed in triathlons and now focuses on running and swimming. In 2023, she completed the London Marathon — an achievement she is particularly proud of. She also enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and their two dogs, which is where she is happiest when not working.

Ola Kambul

Skills Coach

Ola began her career in supply chain within fast-paced warehouse and logistics environments, where she developed a strong understanding of operations and people management. Her journey into the Supply Chain sector wasn’t planned, but through hands-on experience she discovered a passion for improving processes and supporting others – which naturally led her into training and development.

She has progressed through a range of roles across operations, recruitment, and training, including Programme Coach and L&D Lead. She designed and delivered apprenticeship programmes, supporting over 40 learners to successful completion and contributing to strong quality outcomes and inspection success.  Her transition into mentoring was driven by a desire to make a direct impact on people’s confidence, growth, and career progression.

Ola’s mentoring style is supportive, structured, and empowering. She combines real operational experience with coaching expertise, helping learners apply knowledge in practical workplace settings. One of her proudest career achievements has been supporting learners who started with low confidence to achieve distinctions and progress into new roles within their organisations. She has also led a UK-wide Mental Health First Aider network, embedding wellbeing into workplace culture and supporting colleagues through challenging situations.

From day one, she shares a consistent message with every learner: “You’re more capable than you think – but you have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone to see it.”

Outside of work, Ola enjoys walking with her Border Collie, Luna, and cross stitching. She recommends Legacy by James Kerr to anyone in supply chain, for its powerful insights into leadership and culture. If she wasn’t working in mentoring and development, she would likely be pursuing a career as a Visual Merchandiser.
