When you hear experienced buyers refer to “getting their MCIPS” or employers advertise for “CIPS-qualified” candidates, they are talking about the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply – the global professional body that sets the benchmark for good practice in purchasing and supply-chain management. If you work with suppliers in any capacity, understanding what CIPS is – and how its qualifications and membership grades fit together – can make a real difference to your career prospects.
Where did CIPS come from and what does it do?
CIPS began life in 1932 as the Purchasing Officers’ Association, created to help public-sector buyers navigate shortages in the pre-war years. Six decades later, in 1992, it received a Royal Charter that formalised its public duty to “promote and develop high standards of professional skill, ability and integrity” in procurement and supply management. Today, the Institute supports more than 64,000 members across 180 countries, provides training and thought leadership, and lobbies governments on issues such as sustainable sourcing and ethical trade.
At its heart, CIPS exists to raise standards. It publishes codes of conduct, runs conferences and webinars, accredits degree programmes and, most famously, designs a structured ladder of professional qualifications that lead to the coveted post-nominal letters MCIPS.
CIPS membership grades in plain English
CIPS offers six main grades. You usually enter as a Student or Affiliate while you study, progress to Associate (ACIPS) after passing the Level 4 Diploma, and apply for Member (MCIPS) once you have completed the full qualification ladder and logged at least three years’ responsible experience. Those who continue their continuing professional development (CPD) and pass the annual online ethics test move on to Chartered MCIPS, while outstanding senior leaders may be invited to Fellow (FCIPS).
What really matters is that MCIPS and Chartered MCIPS act like a quality kite-mark. Employers know that anyone who carries these letters has mastered the technical, commercial and ethical aspects of modern procurement.
The qualification ladder – five steps, one clear pathway
- Level 2 – Certificate in Procurement & Supply Operations (RQF 3) introduces basic terminology, purchasing process flows, and stock control – ideal for career starters and support roles.
- Level 3 – Advanced Certificate (RQF 4) moves on to stakeholder engagement, inventory management and simple negotiation.
- Level 4 – Diploma in Procurement & Supply (RQF 5) is the first professional stage and the gateway to MCIPS; you study contract law, sourcing strategy and cost analysis.
- Level 5 – Advanced Diploma (RQF 6) equips category or procurement managers with skills in risk management, sustainable sourcing and data analytics.
- Level 6 – Professional Diploma (RQF 7, degree level) prepares future heads of procurement for leadership, governance and transformation projects.
Why MCIPS is worth the effort
Independent salary research makes a compelling case. The 2024 CIPS Procurement & Supply Salary Guide reports an average UK procurement salary of £53,500, with MCIPS-qualified professionals at the leading level earning around 20 per cent more than peers without the designation. The same guide notes that 54 per cent of employers worldwide actively prefer candidates who already hold – or are studying towards – MCIPS, making the letters a genuine passport to more interviews and faster promotion.
Beyond the numbers, MCIPS also signals integrity. Every Chartered member must renew their ethics certificate annually, giving boards and stakeholders confidence that purchasing decisions are being made responsibly.
Five ways CIPS membership pays off in practice
Enhanced credibility – MCIPS after your name is instantly recognised in both the public and private sectors.
Broader career options – because CIPS principles apply in every industry, the qualification travels with you if you move from, say, construction to healthcare.
Better pay and prospects – the salary uplift outlined above translates into thousands of pounds over the course of a career.
Continuous insight – members receive Supply Management magazine, research briefings and webinars on hot topics such as AI in sourcing or Scope-3 emissions.
A global professional network – local branch meetings, online forums and flagship conferences connect you with peers, mentors and future employers.
