Stress Management Strategies for Professional Training and Exams

Professional training and qualifications play an important role in career development across procurement and supply chain roles. However, balancing study, work responsibilities, and exam preparation can sometimes feel demanding.

Whether you are preparing for CIPS qualifications, undertaking a procurement apprenticeship, or progressing your professional development through structured training, managing stress effectively can help you stay focused and achieve the best possible results.

At SR Supply Chain Consultants (SRSCC), we support professionals throughout their learning journey, providing structured training, tutor guidance, and learning resources designed to help learners succeed.

This guide outlines practical stress management strategies for professional training and exams, helping you maintain focus, confidence, and productivity throughout your studies.

Why Stress Can Occur During Professional Training

Studying for professional qualifications often means balancing several priorities at once. Many learners are managing full-time roles while preparing for exams, completing assignments, and engaging with learning materials.

While a certain level of pressure can help maintain motivation, excessive stress can affect concentration, revision effectiveness, and overall confidence when approaching assessments.

Structured learning support can make a significant difference during this process. At SRSCC, learners benefit from guided programmes and resources designed to support exam preparation and professional development.

1. Create a Structured Study Plan

One of the most effective ways to manage stress during professional training is to create a clear and realistic study plan.

Breaking your course content into manageable sections helps ensure you maintain steady progress without feeling overwhelmed.

A structured plan should include:

  • Weekly study goals
  • Time for revision and consolidation
  • Practice assessments and mock exams
  • Regular review of key topics

Learners studying with SRSCC benefit from structured learning support, online resources, and tutor guidance designed to help organise study time effectively.

2. Balance Work, Study and Personal Time

Many professionals undertaking procurement training or CIPS qualifications are balancing learning with demanding roles.

Maintaining a healthy balance between work, study, and personal time is essential for maintaining productivity and wellbeing.

Practical ways to achieve this include:

  • Scheduling regular study sessions during the week
  • Taking short breaks to improve concentration
  • Maintaining a healthy sleep routine
  • Staying active to support mental focus

Creating a balanced routine can help maintain energy levels and prevent burnout during intensive study periods.

3. Use Mock Exams to Build Confidence

Practise working within time constraints

Exam preparation is often one of the most stressful parts of professional training.

Completing practice assessments and mock exams can significantly improve confidence and familiarity with exam formats. Practice exams allow learners to:

  • Understand how exam questions are structured
  • Identify areas where additional revision is needed
  • Practise working within time constraints

SRSCC learners benefit from exam preparation support and guidance designed to help learners approach assessments with confidence.

4. Seek Guidance from Tutors and Learning Support

Professional training programmes are designed to support learners throughout their journey. Access to experienced tutors can help clarify complex topics and provide valuable insight during exam preparation.

At SRSCC, learners benefit from structured support including:

  • Tutor-led learning guidance
  • Progress reviews
  • Collaborative learning environments
  • Access to learning resources and revision support

This structured support network can play a key role in helping learners stay motivated and confident during professional training.

5. Focus on Consistent Progress

Keep a positive mindset

Professional development is a long-term process, and every learner progresses at their own pace.

Rather than aiming for perfection, it is often more effective to focus on steady progress and continuous learning. Each completed module, revision session, or mock exam helps build knowledge and confidence.

Maintaining a positive mindset and recognising progress throughout your training can significantly reduce stress during exam preparation.

6. Remember Your Long-Term Career Goals

Professional qualifications such as CIPS procurement qualifications can support career advancement, leadership opportunities, and professional recognition within the procurement and supply chain sector.

During demanding study periods, reminding yourself of the long-term benefits of achieving your qualification can help maintain motivation.

Professionals who complete procurement training programmes often develop valuable skills in areas such as strategic sourcing, supplier management, and supply chain operations.

Bethanie Stimpson SRSCC

Bethanie Stimpson

Progress Mentor

Bethanie began her career in the fitness industry, working as a personal trainer and gym instructor before becoming involved in coaching children through a triathlon club. This experience sparked her passion for working with young people and ultimately led her into a career in education. She initially worked in a nursery and later as a one-to-one teaching assistant in a primary school, before completing her teaching qualification and postgraduate studies. Since then, Bethanie has taught in both the private and state education sectors.

Her academic background includes a qualification in Sports Development, Fitness and Coaching at college, alongside a Childhood & Youth undergraduate degree (2:1). These studies have enabled her to combine her interests in sport, education, and child development, shaping her holistic approach to teaching and mentoring.

Bethanie is passionate about supporting learners to achieve their goals — educationally, personally, and in terms of wellbeing. She places strong emphasis on communication and relationship building, and takes great pride in helping individuals build confidence and overcome challenges. One of her proudest achievements has been supporting learners who initially doubted themselves to grow in confidence and achieve success.

Outside of work, Bethanie has always maintained a strong interest in sport. She previously competed in triathlons and now focuses on running and swimming. In 2023, she completed the London Marathon — an achievement she is particularly proud of. She also enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and their two dogs, which is where she is happiest when not working.

Ola Kambul

Skills Coach

Ola began her career in supply chain within fast-paced warehouse and logistics environments, where she developed a strong understanding of operations and people management. Her journey into the Supply Chain sector wasn’t planned, but through hands-on experience she discovered a passion for improving processes and supporting others – which naturally led her into training and development.

She has progressed through a range of roles across operations, recruitment, and training, including Programme Coach and L&D Lead. She designed and delivered apprenticeship programmes, supporting over 40 learners to successful completion and contributing to strong quality outcomes and inspection success.  Her transition into mentoring was driven by a desire to make a direct impact on people’s confidence, growth, and career progression.

Ola’s mentoring style is supportive, structured, and empowering. She combines real operational experience with coaching expertise, helping learners apply knowledge in practical workplace settings. One of her proudest career achievements has been supporting learners who started with low confidence to achieve distinctions and progress into new roles within their organisations. She has also led a UK-wide Mental Health First Aider network, embedding wellbeing into workplace culture and supporting colleagues through challenging situations.

From day one, she shares a consistent message with every learner: “You’re more capable than you think – but you have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone to see it.”

Outside of work, Ola enjoys walking with her Border Collie, Luna, and cross stitching. She recommends Legacy by James Kerr to anyone in supply chain, for its powerful insights into leadership and culture. If she wasn’t working in mentoring and development, she would likely be pursuing a career as a Visual Merchandiser.
