Crafting a Winning CV

Your curriculum vitae (CV) is the first impression potential employers have of you. As a procurement professional, it’s essential to ensure that your CV not only showcases your skills and experience but also stands out in a competitive job market. At SR Supply Chain Consultants, we understand the importance of a well-crafted CV in advancing your procurement career. Here are some tips and tricks to help you create a winning CV:

  1. Tailor Your CV to the Job:
Every role in procurement is unique, and so should be your CV. Tailor your CV to match the specific requirements of the job you’re applying for. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that align with the position.
  2. Start with a Strong Profile:
Begin your CV with a compelling professional profile. This brief section should summarize your expertise, key skills, and career goals. It’s the first thing recruiters will read, so make it impactful.
  3. Showcase Key Skills:
Clearly outline your key skills related to procurement. This may include negotiation, contract management, supplier relationship management, and proficiency in procurement software. Use bullet points for easy readability.
  4. Highlight Achievements:
Rather than listing job responsibilities, focus on your achievements. Quantify your contributions with specific numbers and percentages, showcasing how you added value to your previous roles. This could include cost savings, process improvements, or successful project completions.
  5. Emphasize Education and Certifications:
Highlight your educational background and any relevant certifications, especially if you have completed CIPS courses. This demonstrates your commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  6. Use Action Verbs:
Utilize strong action verbs to describe your experiences and achievements. Words like “implemented,” “negotiated,” and “streamlined” convey proactivity and impact.
  7. Keep it Concise:
While it’s essential to showcase your skills and experiences, keep your CV concise and focused. Aim for a two-page document, emphasizing quality over quantity.
  8. Pay Attention to Formatting:
Ensure your CV has a clean and professional layout. Use a readable font, organize information logically, and include headings to guide the reader. Consistency is key.
  9. Include a Relevant Personal Statement:
A brief personal statement can help employers understand your career objectives and motivations. Keep it concise and aligned with the job you’re applying for.
  10. Proofread Thoroughly:
Typos and grammatical errors can undermine the impact of your CV. Proofread your document carefully or ask a colleague to review it for you. Attention to detail is crucial in procurement roles.

While crafting an effective CV is crucial, it’s equally important to have the qualifications that set you apart. For procurement professionals, CIPS certifications are valuable additions to your CV. Whether you’re studying for or have completed a CIPS qualification, be sure to highlight it prominently. Learn more about how SRSCC’s CIPS courses can enhance your professional profile.

Bethanie Stimpson

Progress Mentor

Bethanie began her career in the fitness industry, working as a personal trainer and gym instructor before becoming involved in coaching children through a triathlon club. This experience sparked her passion for working with young people and ultimately led her into a career in education. She initially worked in a nursery and later as a one-to-one teaching assistant in a primary school, before completing her teaching qualification and postgraduate studies. Since then, Bethanie has taught in both the private and state education sectors.

Her academic background includes a qualification in Sports Development, Fitness and Coaching at college, alongside a Childhood & Youth undergraduate degree (2:1). These studies have enabled her to combine her interests in sport, education, and child development, shaping her holistic approach to teaching and mentoring.

Bethanie is passionate about supporting learners to achieve their goals — educationally, personally, and in terms of wellbeing. She places strong emphasis on communication and relationship building, and takes great pride in helping individuals build confidence and overcome challenges. One of her proudest achievements has been supporting learners who initially doubted themselves to grow in confidence and achieve success.

Outside of work, Bethanie has always maintained a strong interest in sport. She previously competed in triathlons and now focuses on running and swimming. In 2023, she completed the London Marathon — an achievement she is particularly proud of.
