The End point Assessment – What is it and What’s the Value?


In this latest article, SRSCC explain just exactly what the end point assessment is, as well as the value it offers to student apprentices and their employers.

What is The End Point Assessment?

End Point Assessment is the final stage of an Apprenticeship which must be successfully passed to become certified.  EPA is the opportunity for the Apprentice to demonstrate the knowledge and skills that have learned and developed during the Apprenticeship and further demonstrating a full understanding of the occupational role.   

When can Apprentices Start their EPA?

Apprentices can only start EPA after they have completed the on programme learning and completed a gateway evaluation.  The evaluation assesses whether a learner has met all the knowledge, skills and behaviour element requirements of the apprenticeship standard.  It usually involves two elements, for instance, portfolio of evidence, online test, examinations, observations, project reports, professional discussions, presentations, and interviews.

How are EPAs Assessed?

End-point assessments are conducted by independent assessment organisations such as industry leaders, for example The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply, Chartered Management Institute or recognised and respected assessment bodies such as City and Guilds and Pearsons. End point assessment organisations are responsible for ensuring that the EPA’s minimise bias, are manageable, reliable and valid.  They are responsible for clearly communicating the process and requirements, providing suitable toolkits to Training Providers and apprentices whilst also ensuring they remain fit for purpose.  They are required to work collaboratively with employers, apprentices and training providers and provide regular training and quality assure the delivery of EPA’s.

Many of these End Point Assessment Organisation use software that gives the Apprentice and Training Providers the benefit of a simplified and streamlined approach providing clarity and control, knowing exactly where each Apprentice is on their EPA journey. All end-point assessments are fully supported to improve the EPA experience.  Apprenticeship end point assessment guidance is provided by all end point assessment organisations upon registration for end point assessment.  Whilst on programme and during the end point assessment period Training Providers are instrumental in supporting the Apprentice to prepare for their final assessment. 

What if an Apprentice Fails the End Point Assessment?

If an Apprentice fails their end point assessment feedback will be given by the end point assessment organisation (EPAO) and the Training Provider will provide further support in preparing the Apprentice for their resit.

How do I Secure Funding for an EPA?

All apprenticeships and end point assessment are fully funded by the levy and there are many new apprenticeship standards that are being developed; so take full advantage of the exciting opportunities available.  A wide range of Apprenticeship Programmes available, from Health and Social Care, IT, Optician, Fish Monger, Procurement, Marketing, Business Administrator and Digital.

How Long do Apprenticeships Last?

The length of the apprenticeship programmes ranges from 1-5 years depending on the Apprenticeship.  The minimum duration of an apprenticeship is 12months and end point assessment usually range from 3-6 months.  There are many different learning options from day release to online learning ensuring a flexible approach.

For learners, the EPA showcases their newly acquired knowledge, skills and behaviours to their organisations.  EPA raises their profile within their business and accelerates promotion and career development opportunities whilst also gaining a recognised qualification. 

For the organisation, EPA’s that relate to a genuine business need to demonstrate a return on their investment in the apprentices’ development.  For instance, EPA often generates a need for a project that otherwise would not be undertaken.  Many apprentices implement their projects within their organisations and often increase efficiencies, reduce risk or reduce cost.  Completing an Apprenticeship and End Point Assessment ensures quality of training and assessment of Apprenticeship skills and knowledge to fully enable employees to reach occupational competencies.

Emma joined SRSCC in 2019 on a freelance basis taking on a teaching and learning consultancy role. She has 20 years of experience in education as a qualified teacher, working in adult learning, secondary and primary school settings in the UK as well as abroad, namely Japan, Hungary, and France. 

More recently Emma has been teaching yoga, resilience, and mindfulness in primary schools to promote the physical and mental well-being of both pupils and staff.

Being multi-lingual and having a zeal for communication, cultural exchange and life-long learning Emma jumped at the opportunity to join the company as a Course Mentor. Building a good rapport with her learners, supporting them to overcome any challenges on their apprentice journey and facilitating them to fulfil their potential is her motivation.

Cumbrian born and bred in the Lake District, Emma enjoys the outdoors. When not relaxing in tree pose, she is most at home trail running in the hills with her husband and dog. Having clocked up 4 marathons to date, the application of her long-distance running mindset of perseverance, determination, discipline and patience is key to supporting her learners in their studies.
